Sports injuries are injuries that occur to athletes while performing physical activities. The most common sports-related injuries are overuse injuries that are caused by overusing a particular body part. Traumatic injuries are caused by collisions with other players, ground and physical objects. Unexpected dynamic forces on limbs or joints can also lead to numerous injuries.
Achilles Tendinitis – This overuse injury is most common among athletes who participate in sports that involve running such as soccer, hockey, basketball and rugby. The Achilles tendon is a large tendon in the back of the ankle. Overuse of the calf muscle can cause inflammation of the tendon, leading to severe pain in the lower leg. Physiotherapy treatment RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) combined with anti-inflammatory medications helps relieve pain and alleviates other symptoms associated with injury. Strengthening and stretching exercises for the calf muscle help speed up the healing process and prevent reoccurrence of the injury.
Tennis Elbow – It is a repetitive stress injury occurring in the lateral side of the elbow region. This injury causes tendon degeneration in the elbow due to repeated backhand strokes in tennis, swimming and climbing. Direct blows to the epicondyle, forceful extension, or a sudden forceful pull can also cause tennis elbow. Symptoms include severe pain on the outside of the elbow, tenderness over the lateral epicondyle, pain from gripping, and morning stiffness. Physiotherapy exercises such as forearm-strengthening exercises are highly effective at eliminating pain and increasing strength in the elbow. Low level laser therapy under the supervision of a physical therapy expert helps relieve pain and reduces inflammation.
Runner’s Knee – Also known as chondromalacia patellae, this condition is characterized by inflammation of the underside of the kneecap. Overuse, bursitis, core instability, or neuromas may cause this injury. Pain due to overuse can be managed with the combination of RICE, anti-inflammatory medications and physiotherapy exercises. Avoid irritating activities for several weeks and strengthen quadriceps through light exercises to boost the healing process and gain full recovery.
Fractures – A bone fracture can be a result of high force impact or stress. Non-surgical procedures such as pain management, immobilization, and stabilization are very effective in relieving pain and restoring the fractured pieces of bone to their natural positions.
Concussion – Is a serious medical condition that occurs due to a traumatic blow to the head. This injury is most common among players in contact sports such as boxing, wrestling, soccer, basketball, rugby and hockey. Symptoms include headache, unconsciousness, nausea, difficulty concentrating, loss of balance, and amnesia. Severity of concussion is measured with various concussion grading systems. Analgesics and rest are recommended to patients with minor injuries. If the brain or skull has been severely damaged by trauma, a neurosurgical evaluation may be required by an expert.
Strain – It refers to trauma to a muscle or ligament due to overstretching and tearing of muscle fibers. This injury usually happens when one suddenly changes his or her direction while running. Symptoms include sharp pain, inflammation and bruising on the injured muscle. Cold compression therapy helps relieve the pain and prevents fluid from leaking into the injured area.
